Savoy Truffle

The 60s is an era that’s pretty close to our hearts. It was a period of expression and change that gave rise to some of the most influential music of all time. Britain exploded into sound and colour

Pretty Green have dropped their opening salvo of their mainline AW17 collection on Green Label this week, following on from the purple floral pre-collection.

It's a bit of a random hotch-potch of bits n bobs, not really a cohesive collection so far. But in fairness, it's very early days and this is just a first taster of what's to come under the 60's tagline. Not a criticism, just hard to work out as we have only have a few pieces to look at so far.

A few pick outs from the early risers of the range, yes, none of these are groundbreaking or entirely new, we've seen most of this in various guises previously, but the new iterations are well worth a look as PG bring some timeless classics back into the GL fold. There is a real broadness to the GL collections in recent years, but for me it works best when it sticks to these heritage looks.

Up first, the Lennon denim jacket, okay they won't call it a Lennon but we know where this influence comes from. I like the subtle historical reference on this one, again PG taking a standard term and placing the words out of order as their mark on it. It's nothing major, just enough to give it that unique little PG twist.

Looks to be made from a nice soft denim with a good wash on it. And with the various darker denims on offer you can rock a double denim look without joining the Status Quo fanclub.

Next up is their Kaftan style shirt, simple..plain...classic...timeless...sums it up nicely. There's not too much to say here, this is a really cool style, kept close to the roots of the style with very little in the way of detailing other than a logo badge (sadly) and a bit of layering on the placket. Back to that badge, I'm sure PG are right fed up of me mentioning the use of badges on certain pieces, and who'd blame them. I understand that GL needs to carry the logo, I really do, I'd just love to see some subtle imagination brought in for styles like this. PG embroidered in accent somewhere on the shirt maybe...?

Okay, I get excitable about Selvedge denim, it's not as if I can hide that fact. Pat Salter at PG knows his onions when it comes to denim, so it's been a sore miss not to have Selvedge available. But now they're back, and man it's good to see them! Last season's BL brought some back, but only in a skinny fit (which yes, I pissed and moaned about like a right big child). The new ones are slim-fit, so we're getting there. Really hope to see these in the regular fit also. One thing they haven't done is tell us whether the denim used is Japanese, American or Italian, so answers on a postcard. Enough waffle, great to see these back and even better to see PG have kept them pared down to their beautiful best. Could be an early AW17 signature piece IMHO, seeriously if buy one pair of jeans this year make it these ones.

Lastly, new scarves, and man I love a PG scarf. Yes, loads of different options out there that many folks can rightly claim come in at a better price point. But a PG scarf has a certain something about it that makes it desirable. I think the new wool scarf looks the business! I have one of PG's first wool scarves and I have to say for something that is so thin and delicate it is incredibly warm, I'd never have believed it. So this one is straight on the list. They've used their new floral pattern on this one in a muted Winter mix of hues. Just top class.

PG love their musical history and tying in obscure references, I mean who'd have thought they'd use a tile design from a toilet in the SS16 range! I do wonder where this pattern comes from, is it just the rugs used in music studios or is it something else we can't quite put our finger on.
